Is There a Blood Test for Bone Density?
No — bone density can't be measured from a blood sample. Here's what blood tests can and can't tell you about your bones, and what actually measures bone density in the UK.
Is there a blood test for bone density?
No. There is no blood test that can measure your bone density. If you have been told otherwise, or you have seen a private "bone health blood panel" sold as an alternative to a scan, it is worth knowing exactly where the line falls.
The Royal Osteoporosis Society puts it without hedging: "Blood and bone marker tests are not used to diagnose osteoporosis or to find out your chance of breaking a bone." Royal Osteoporosis Society
The reason is straightforward once you see what bone density actually is. Density is a physical quantity — how much mineral is packed into a given volume of bone. It is a property of the bone itself, sitting inside your hip and your spine. Nothing circulating in your bloodstream reports that number back. To measure it, something has to look at the bone.
So what do blood tests tell you about your bones?
Quite a lot — just not your density. Blood tests do real work in a bone health investigation. They are used to find causes, not to make the diagnosis.
The Royal Osteoporosis Society explains that "Your healthcare professional may refer you for a blood test while you are being investigated for osteoporosis. This is because blood tests are sometimes used to diagnose and rule out medical conditions that can cause osteoporosis." Royal Osteoporosis Society Their examples include checking calcium levels to look for hyperparathyroidism, and checking inflammatory markers if a condition such as rheumatoid arthritis is suspected.

The distinction worth holding onto: a blood test can explain why bone might be thinning. Only a scan can tell you how much bone is there.
What about CTX and P1NP?
These are genuine blood tests for bone — but they measure the rate of bone turnover, not the amount of bone.
Your bones are living tissue in constant renewal. Old bone is broken down and new bone is built, continuously, and that activity leaves traces in the blood. Those traces are called bone turnover markers, and you may see them written as P1NP, CTX and NTX. Royal Osteoporosis Society
They answer a different question from a scan:

They are also not a routine test. The Royal Osteoporosis Society notes that "Bone markers are only used in specialist centres and normally for research." Royal Osteoporosis Society If you have not been offered one, that is not an oversight — most people never need one.

What actually measures bone density?
A scan of the bone. There are two routes used in the UK.
DEXA is the long-established method, and the one the NHS uses. It passes a very low dose of X-rays through the bone: as the NHS describes it, "Special detectors in the DEXA machine measure how much radiation passes through your bones, and this information is sent to a computer." Your result is then "compared with the bone density of a young healthy adult or an adult of your own age, gender and ethnicity" — which is where your T-score and Z-score come from. NHS, 2022

Either way, the output is a density figure and a T-score — and that, not a blood result, is what a diagnosis of osteoporosis rests on.
Why do so many people search for a bone density blood test?
Because it is a reasonable thing to assume. Blood tests have quietly become the default mental model for "getting checked" — cholesterol, HbA1c, vitamin D, thyroid, iron. It is natural to expect bone to work the same way.
It doesn't, and the reason is worth understanding rather than just accepting: blood chemistry reflects what is happening in your body right now. Bone density reflects decades of accumulated structure. A blood sample can catch a process in motion. It cannot weigh the building.
That is also why bone density screening exists as a separate thing at all — and why it is the one bone test that cannot be folded into a routine blood panel.
